It stars Virginia Mckenna, Paul Scofield and Jack Warner and the film tells the true story of Violette Szabo who, as a member of the SOE(Special Operations Executive) volunteered to be parachuted into France to reorganise a shattered French Resistance group. She joins the group, harrying German reinforcements for the Normandy front where she remains until captured by the Germans and is handed over to the Gestapo. A cruel and prolonged interrogation fails to make her betray her comrades, and she is deported to Germany. The horror and squalor of Ravensbruck concentration camp fails to break Violette’s spirit even when she learns that she is to be executed by firing squad for espionage.
